Figurative, metaphysical and strange
A retrospective exhibition of the work of painter Nat Krate at the Ringling College of Art and Design presents the realist artist’s figurative paintings, metaphorical nudes, and his highly precise images of flowers and exotic plants.
After retiring from his successful advertising agency in 1980, Krate and his wife, Helen, moved to Longboat Key. Krate had studied painting at the Art Students League and Pratt Institute in New York in the late 1930s but was not able to devote full time to his art until he was 62. He quickly began to win awards in regional competitions and has taken part in group exhibitions at museums throughout the Southeast including Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art, Huntsville Museum of Art, Mobile Museum of Art, Orlando Museum of Art and the Ringling Museum of Art.
Krate recently celebrated his 90th birthday and is still painting. The exhibition opened on Nat and Helen’s 43rd wedding anniversary.

"Self Portrait" by Nat Krate.
In conjunction with the Krate exhibition, the expressive figurative work of Gale Fulton Ross and Lynn Davison will be shown in Gallery II. The exhibition, "Figurative/Narrative: Lynn Davison & Gale Fulton Ross."

"Ghana Mother" by Gale Fulton Ross.
After receiving her MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Ross became known for her portraits of such African American luminaries as Billie Holiday, Jackie Robinson, A. Philip Randolph, and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

"Dues for Dogs" by Lynn Davison.
A graduate of the Ringling School of Art and Design, Davison has had a very successful career as a painter for more than 30 years. Her often strange and sometimes slightly disturbing paintings have been purchased by numerous private and public collections.
Both exhibitions in Selby Gallery will run until July 31.
The Selby Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is located on the Ringling College of Art and Design campus, one-half block east of 2700 N.
