Doing it his way

Venice Theatre Director Allan Kollar, Musical Director Michelle Kasanofsky and Choreographer Cynthia Ashford have a treat planned for audiences in the Venice Theatre reprisal of the best-selling cabaret, "My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra."

The show opens the theatre’s 2009-2010 Cabaret Season, running on the Pinkerton Stage from Aug. 28 through Sept. 13.

"My Way" originally opened at Venice Theatre for a limited run in the summer of 2003. It immediately sold out and performances were added – twice. Each extension sold out, and the theatre maintained a waiting list for cancellations. In response to "My Way’s" popularity, the theatre presented the cabaret a second time as part of its 2004-2005 season.

Singing the standards of Frank Sinatra in the 2009 incarnation of "My Way" are professional performers Kim Gardner Kollar, Allen Kretschmar, Bobbi Eschenbach and Chris Caswell. All are veterans of Venice Theatre’s Cabaret Series. The singers will be led by seasoned jazz musician and frequent musical director Michelle Kasanofsky, who will be playing keyboard on stage with a small combo.

The authors of the review, David Grapes and Todd Olson, began work on "My Way" shortly after Sinatra’s death in 1998. The resulting show was an instant hit in theatres around the country. One local reviewer raved, "At the end of the evening, the title song will leave you with a tear in the eye and a lump in the throat. Who could ask for anything more?"

"My Way" features 56 songs recorded by Sinatra, including "Strangers in The Night," "Where or When," "My Kind of Town (Chicago Is)," "New York, New York," and "I’ve Got You Under My Skin."

Venice Theatre is located at 140 W. Tampa Ave. on the island in Venice. Tickets to "My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra" are available by phone at 941-488-1115 or in person at the box office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The box office also opens one hour before all shows for walk-up tickets. Tickets are always available online at www.venicestage.com.

Performances are Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. Tickets are $24 ($12 for students).
